A century of honest work with wood
We specialise in the production of wooden barrels, tubs and vats, which are renowned for their quality, durability and aesthetic finish.
Our Story: A Family Heritage of Craftsmanship
We are Bednářství Fryzelka, a family business based in Wallachia and the largest cooperage in the Czech Republic. For over 90 years, we have maintained the tradition first established by our great-grandfather Josef Kovařík. He received his training from a local master and passed on his passion for the craft to his father and uncle, and subsequently to us. Our passion is evident in every product we create, from classic wooden barrels that are used to mature the finest wines and spirits, to modern and luxurious wellness tubs that allow for beer or wine baths. Our company is committed to combining proven traditional methods with modern technologies. Our company is committed to providing you with products that are of the highest quality and durability.
Our story
In 1928, our great-grandfather established a small cooperage workshop in Vlachovice. At that time, the Wallachia region was home to numerous coopers, and barrels were an essential component of every farm, cellar, and household. From the outset, the family philosophy was simple: one either became a cooper or did not leave the house. A love of the craft was passed down from generation to generation.
Our great-grandfather was the first to manufacture barrels by hand, using basic tools and drawing on the years of experience of local master coopers. His precision and honesty soon became renowned far and wide. Over the decades, the family has overcome many challenges. We maintained our commitment to the craft through the post-war period and during the years when metal and plastic began to replace wood. Similarly, during the 1990s, when many predicted the demise of traditional carpentry, we persevered and continued to provide our services. We have gradually expanded our product range and workshop. The original small space left by our great-grandfather was no longer sufficient, so a larger facility was built on the site of an old barn.
This allowed Fryzelka Cooperage to continue its growth, always with an emphasis on its original values: quality craftsmanship and a personal approach. Today, our cooperage is among the most respected in the Czech Republic. Our workshop is home to a team of experienced coopers, carpenters, and local artisans who share our passion for wood. We continue to handcraft classic barrels for wine and slivovitz, while also responding to modern trends. For instance, we now produce wooden bathtubs and sauna tubs, which have been in high demand in recent years.
Annually, we process dozens of cubic meters of high-quality oak wood, which our hands transform into barrels, tubs, and other products. We carefully select and dry every piece of wood to ensure the final product meets the highest standards. In this way, our family business lives on, combining the traditional art of cooperage with the needs of today. We proudly carry on the family tradition and are pleased to offer our customers products whose honesty and quality honor the work of our ancestors.
Craftsmanship and Quality
For more than ninety years, we have been building on honest work and traditional methods. We place emphasis on the careful selection of wood, which we process by hand and leave to dry naturally for at least two years. We use strong hot-dip galvanised hoops to make our barrels, and each barrel undergoes rigorous water and pressure testing to ensure it is completely watertight. It is this combination of traditional methods and modern technology that guarantees the highest quality of all our products.
